The course introduces first-year students to the foundational principles, scope, and societal relevance of the mechanical engineering profession. Anchored in the CDIO (Conceive–Design–Implement–Operate) framework, the course immerses students in real-world engineering contexts that emphasize problem-solving, innovation, ethical responsibility, and sustainability.
Students explore the engineering mindset through project-based learning, teamwork, communication, and exposure to design thinking. The course integrates the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) by highlighting the role of mechanical engineers in addressing global challenges such as clean energy, sustainable infrastructure, responsible consumption, and climate action.
By the end of the course, students are expected to understand the life cycle of engineering systems, appreciate the interdisciplinary and global nature of engineering practice, and develop a sense of purpose aligned with ethical engineering for sustainable development
