This course aims to provide students with the core and advanced skills and knowledge in qualitative research methodology. The course aims to introduce students to the basic and more advanced qualitative research philosophies, methods, and tools useful in social science research. This course will teach students working knowledge of the different qualitative research traditions (ethnography, case study, phenomenology, grounded theory, and discourse analysis). Alternative research methods, such as online ethnography and multi-sited qualitative research, will also be covered in this course to be more relevant to the current challenges. By the course's end, students must conduct their qualitative studies in small groups. They are expected to write the proposal, conduct the study, analyze or unpack the data, write the full qualitative research report, and present their completed studies before an audience in a mini-forum.
