This course introduces the principles and applications of planning and design for environmental and sanitary engineering systems and facilities. It emphasizes the integration of research methods, data collection, systems planning, analysis, and design to develop a comprehensive project output. Topics include the design and evaluation of solid waste management facilities, as well as water supply and wastewater treatment systems. The course also covers cost estimation, project scheduling, and technical reporting. All design requirements are guided by the Sanitation Code of the Philippines and other relevant standards, codes, and guidelines to ensure compliance and professional practice.

This course aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by contributing to SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through the design of sustainable water, wastewater, and sanitation systems. It supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting efficient resource use, solid waste management, and environmentally sound technologies, while addressing SDG 13 (Climate Action) through climate-resilient infrastructure planning. The course also advances SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by ensuring public health protection and supports SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by reducing pollution and safeguarding ecosystems.
This subject prepares students to understand the basic considerations, theory and methods of planning and designing of sewage, industrial wastewater treatment facilities. It shall present design horizon setting, service area, site selection, design population, wastewater quantifications, regulatory controls and effluent limitations, characteristics of sewage and wastewater, degree of treatment, process, flow schemes and alternative comparison, equipment selection, treatment plant layout and hydraulics profiles, energy and resource requirements, costing and economics, specifications and contracts.

This course supports SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities by developing skills in designing sustainable sewage and industrial wastewater treatment systems that protect public health and the environment. This course is intended to provide the students with the hands-on experience on the application of theoretical aspects of environmental engineering to experiments or projects that would illustrate the effect engineering control processes on environmental or sanitary- related problems
